As Poppie would say, “A penny saved is a penny earned”. Many of us feel pressured to find a better paying job in order to pay the bills. What if we were to do a better job of saving without giving up anything that we enjoy? Here is an example:
My wife and I were growing increasingly frustrated with our monthly cable bill. The price kept rising but the service was not increasing. Before taking the final step of cutting it off completely, I decided to see if I could get a discount on the bill.
I contacted my cable provider last week. Not knowing who I should speak to, I chose the billing option. I quickly realized that they could do nothing for me, even after asking for a supervisor. I was transferred to the disconnect department.
My assumption is the disconnect department is the place of last resort. The reps will do anything possible to keep you from cutting off your service. I went in with as many bullet points as I could think of:
- The economy and the need to cut back on extra expenses
- ‘Cutting the cord’ and just watching tv over the internet
- Using Rabbit ears to pick up the over the air channels
- Verizon Fios has been making me a great offer to switch
- DirectTV and Dish Network sound like reasonable options
- NetFlix
I mentioned that I always pay my bill on time and that I want to give them the opportunity to keep my business. I made it clear that I had no interest in additional packages that will only go up later- such as a landline telephone number.
The rep. spoke to his manager and the cable portion of my bill was cut in half for one calendar year with no commitment or contract necessary. If you call and one rep. isn’t particularly helpful, ask for the manager or call back later and speak to another rep.
This strategy is likely to work for many cable companies. Make sure to set aside an hour as you will be on hold for long periods of time.
